Islam Paragraph

Please post a one paragraph description of what you would like to learn about in Islam. You can do some initial research, but keep the research brief. I'm more interested in you explaining what question you want to explore and why it's interesting to you. Your paragraph should be about four sentences long, and should begin with "I am interested in learning more about ..."

I am interested in learning about the situation between the Sunni and the Shia. It is still going on today and I want to know how the fighting started. I want to learn how the two groups were formed. I know that they were fighting over the caliph, the successor of Muhammad. I want to learn about this because it is still going on today and affecting people today.

I would like to learn about the Kaaba because it's so important in Islamic culture. I think it's cool that the area surrounding it is completely war- free. I would like to learn a little bit more about it and who was in it. I'd like to learn about it's origins and structure.

One thing that we have not learned about in class is Islamic marriage. I have briefly seen that marriage is extremely important. When I though about learning more about Islamic marriage, I learned that there is more than one kind of marriage. I think this would give me a better understanding of their culture. I want to learn more about their culture and this would help.

I am interested in learning more about the Quran. I didn't know that much about it from the reading or from the video and I would like to know more about the effect it had on the Islamic people and what it's purpose was. Even though we already know a lot about Mohammad, I would still like to find out more about him. His role in the Islamic culture is very intriguing from what I know so far.

What I really want to learn about in Islamic culture is the Kaaba. I really do not understand what it is. I think it is just a religious gathering place, but what is in it? Also, is the cubic shape significant of anything? I want to learn about the Kaaba because I do not know much about it, and it seems to be extremely important in Islamic culture (expecially the one in Mecca, because that is where people take the Hajj to).

I would like to know more about the significance of royals in the spread of religion. Examples include Constantine as well as others for Christianity. There were also royals that converted to other religions in different parts of the world. What motive did these kings have? How big an impact on the acceptance of the religion did they cause?

I am interested in learning more about Jerusalem's significance to Islam because I hear Jerusalem often in the news. I know why it is important to Judaism and Christianity, but why is it important to Islam. I don't know of any connection to the prophet Muhammed, like Mecca or Medina, yet it is one of the three holiest cities in Islam. I want to learn about Jerusalem's significance to Islam because it would be like seeing something familiar and famous but through a differnt culture's eye.

I am interested in learning about women's rights and how they have changed over time. In the video we watched women were said to have rights. Things drastically changed over time and I would really like to learn about why there were those changes. Was there a certain ruler that decided that these changes needed to be made?

I would like to learn more about the kabba. I would like what was originally there, what has been destroyed and what was built by Mohammed. I didn’t realize how big the kabba was (forty feet tall). I would like to know more about what the mosque is like in which the kabba is placed. Obviously the kabba has been tinkered with because the Qu’ran is inscripted on the kabba, which was around before the Qu’ran.

I am interested in learning about the split between the Sunni and the Shia. I would like to know in what ways they differ besides who should be leader. I want to learn more because I think that it is interesting how such a simple difference(s)can lead to the fighting. I would also like to learn when this split occurred.

Also, i would like to know if their the architecture changed at all after the re-capture of Mecca. Also, did it change after Mohammed died?

I would to learn more about the Women in Islam. Specifically, about if their roles in their society are equal to the men in their society. I would like to know what type of jobs they can take on and if they can own business too. Also, it would be interesting to find out about what they can wear in public because I’ve seen their headscarves. In all it would be good to learn about different aspects of the Muslim religion
