Islam Questions

Now that you have read a little about Islam (pp. 252-258) and seen about an hour of the video, post at least three questions here. Make sure your questions are spread throughout the reading and not clustered around the first page or so.

1.Specifically what pagan traditions were commonly believed in Arabia?

2. The reading mentioned an afterlife containing "pleasure gardens, and young women". The Qu'ran also mentions that warriors will "be given 72 virgins upon entering paradise". Where did this idea come from?

3. The reading states that the idea of one god was "strange". However, the Muslim year 1 is year 662 in the Christian calender. Does this mean that the Arabians did not ever hear of Christianity?

Why did Mohammed treat the people of Mecca so much less harsh after he conquered Mecca than what was normal in the times?

Why was the idea of a life after death so scary to people? Did they not want to continue life?

Why were fighting and arguments stopped when people were trading, was it a law or were the people just calm when they wanted to trade?

Why is there a difference between the Shias and the Sunnis? Is it a race or family background difference, or just the beliefs?

*Sorry I didn't get to post until now (9:30), I was out with my mom and I didn't realize we would get back so late. Thanks!

1. It doesn't make sense that to say that the Arabs would be a huge threat if they were divided. Why do they say that they were a huge threat when divided but not when together?

2. When Mohammad fought with Mecca, what was it over?

3. I'm still a little bit confused on the phrase "to submit" means? Could you explain this a little bit more, in terms of the Islam religion?

What did the "transformation from a regional nuisance into a dynamic force" entail?
Why did women begin to have more rights under the Islamic religion such as initiating divorce and conducting business?
In the video in class I thought that it was stated that Muslims were generally tolerant of other religions but we see that they are destroying Zoroastrian temples. Were they only tolerant of Judaism and Christianity because they believed that they had it mostly right with an "updated word"?

One last thing, why do the Shias and the Sunnis have such a strong hatred for each other that they fight about it because other religions also have different sects but they dont fight about it?
