Magna Carta

Please post at least three sentences here once you have completed the reading. At least one of your sentences must focus on Magna Carta, but you can also ask questions about/find resources about China if that seems interesting to you.

Remember to use the format for posting a link that we went over in class (it's on the assignments page).

I saw the term baron and was wondering what that was. I found out it was like a nobleman. I was also reading the second document and was wondering what the big hangar looked like. Here's a picture .

King John of England had a dispute with the pope. He expelled the Chapters. What exactly is the Chapter? Is it a group of religious people that make decisions for leaders? This did not please the pope and he took immediate action against John and excommunicated him. This link also has information about King John's whole life
King John

This link Magna Carta forced onKing John explains how the Magna Carta was forced upon King John and how it has affected people over the centuries. It includes a picture of the Magna Carta Monument. The monument is in Runnymede.

Here is a picture of the sign at the monument Magna Carta Monument It says "To commemorate Magna Carta Symbol of Freedom Under Law."

It mentioned the word villeins and I didn't know what that meant. I looked it up and it is one of a class of feudal serfs who held the legal status of freemen in their dealings with all people except their lord.

What specifically made the Magna Carta the "cornerstone of the freedoms and democracy enjoyed in the Anglo-Saxon world and beyond"?

Here is a website I found that has more on the effects that the Magna Carta has on us today.

ok, both of the links I posted didn't go to the correct place so here are just the urls:

I did not know what a "charter" was, so I googled it. Unfortunately, everything that came up was Charter school this, charter school that so I went to the Wikipedia Page (link didn't work):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charter

I wish I could have found a more reliable source.

Also, I was wondering what the Charter of Liberties was. Sorry this link didn't go through for some reason... but here it is:

1) Why did the Ming Dynasty change it's name?

2) How many states existed in Northern China?

3) How exactly did Qin unify the states?

4) Why did the Magna Carta mean less to the serfs and villeins?

5) How did the Magna Carta not limit the kings power

Most of my questions were answered by the blog, already, but I wanted to know the names of any barons in particular invlved with the Magna Carta. Geoffrey Luttrell
was a one of the "rebelious" barons.

Also, here is a picture of the font used to write the magna carta, which I thought was interesting.

Question: Was there an Islamic equivelant of the Magna Carta? I looked, but I couldn't find an answer.

I am interested in the tension between King John and the pope of that time. Here is a link about this. John wanted to have one of his men go into the church when one of the men died. He wanted to have an influence in the church. This lead to the tension between the church and king.

King and Pope Dispute

When and where was the magna carta signed? Was it based off of the idea of the Roman Republic? This is a version of the magna carta. I think that this is really interesting because it seems to firstly state the freedom but then it goes on to say many other things.

Text of Magna Carta

I searched on google for a picture of the magna carta but it mostly came up with the same picture. I looked on getty images and found a more realistic picture of the Magna.

I looked at the life of King John of England. Turns out, he was the younger brother of Richard The Lionheart. This made me think about what we talked about in class of how the oldest son gets everything, and the youngest gets nothing.

King John also appears in fiction, being known as the villain in Robin Hood, and having a play written about him by Shakespeare.

In the first reading i wondered what exactly a "http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/charter>charter was. (also there is a wikipedia "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charter>artical on it)

I also found a "http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/featured_documents/magna_carta/images/magna_carta.jpg>picture of the original magna carta. (you can zoom in by clicking on it)

Why were the King of England and the Pope fighting? Why did the Pope excommunicate the King? Why would the barons agree to keeping King John in power? I found a picture of part of the Magna Carta on display here.

Here is a explanation of the verbal sparring between the King and the Pope. It starts off with saying that King John is the worst king ever in England.

I was wondering what the Magna Carta looked like.

Here's a picture www.archives.gov/exhibits/featured_documents/magna_carta/images/magna_carta.jpg"

What triggered the excommunication of the King of England and the Pope?

What is Runnymede?

What was the 13 element alloy that was used to make the weapons?
When will Qin Shihuang's tomb be opened (if ever)?
Also, is the fact that Manga Carta was signed at Runnymede important?
And I found this map of where Runnymede is.

Here is a link to an image of the document that you can scroll around on- I just thought it was kind of cool.

I wanted to get a better sense of how the Magna Carta connected to the US Constitution, and I found some info on this page...

"Just as Magna Carta stood as a bulwark against tyranny in England, the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights today serve similar roles, protecting the individual freedoms of all Americans against arbitrary and capricious rule."
